I’ve owned several Akubras. They are a bloody good hat. I wear them until they are full of holes, dirt, blood and sweat. My last Akubra lasted me about 3 years, so you don’t mind paying a bit for them. They are not a cheap hat, but at the same time they are excellent value for money.

Feel like a bit of a goose posing for a photo with my new hat. Feel even more like a goose with my very poor attempt to grow a beard.

My latest purchase was an Akubra “Territory”. I spent a heap of time on the Akubra website browsing through their extensive range of hats. There are some absolute beauties on there. I’d love to buy them all. But the Territory model really stood out to me. There was also a model called the “Snowy River” which I really liked the look of, but the thing that sold me on the Territory is the large breather holes on the sides. Lets face it, you wear your hat when you are outside in the heat. If you’re a big sweaty guy like me, then anything that might help keep your noggin cool is a bonus. And the breather holes actually work. My head gets far less sweaty than it did with my old Akubra. (Which didn’t have the breather holes)

I ended up buying the hat online for about $130 delivered.

Another good feature of the Territory is brim of the hat is very big. I would even call it over-sized. It’s perfect for shading a big, fat head like mine.

Speaking of fat heads, the Akubra website has an extremely helpful page that will assist in choosing what size hat you need. It tells you how to measure your head and then what size hat you need as a result. My head measured 61cm, so I bought a 62cm hat because they do shrink slightly. I’m currently living in a remote area of the Northern Territory, so I couldn’t just waltz in to the local RM Williams store and try on some hats. It’s over 1,000km away. So the website helped heaps.

In summary, brilliant hat and a brilliant Aussie brand. I love my Akubra.
