This post is going to be a continuous work in progress. I will be adding meat pies all the time.

When traveling around Australia, stopping for a feed is one of the things to look forward to to break up a day or driving. And of all of the driving Jazz and I have done, we have completed more kilometres in Queensland than anywhere else.

I see myself as a bit of a “foodie”. And nothing beats a good Meat Pie. In all of Queensland, there are some great meat pies out there. Hand made pies in country bakery’s are usually define, but there are some shockers out there.

The Marino Bakery in Longreach
We look forward to going to this bakery on every trip through Longreach because they do superb coffees. And every time, I get a pie. And every time, I say to Jazz, “The pies here are terrible.” The pastry on them is thicker than Cunningham’s Gap. And I love pastry. Jazz gets the salad sandwich from the Marino Bakery in Longreach, which is really good.

Barcaldine
About an hour away in Barcaldine there is a small, inconspicuous bakery. The pies there are exactly what you would expect from an Australian country town bakery. The pastry is nice, and the guts of the pie is rich and full of flavour. It’s not an award winner, but definitely worth a try.

Yatala Pies
If you haven’t had a Yatala Pie, then plan your next road trip now. Visit stop Yatala. Located North of the Gold Coast but South of Brisbane, Yatala Pies has become an iconic part of Queensland. Located just off the M1 Motorway, Yatala Pies is the perfect spot to take a break, and a lot of people use the car park as a meeting place. Yatala pies even has a drive thru!

They have an impressive menu of pies to choose from. The first thing you will notice is the size of the pies. They are bigger than a standard pie. The pastry is wonderful and flaky. When you taste a Yatala Pie, it becomes obvious that they have been doing this for a very long time. They know how to make a good bloody pie.

Dingo Roadhouse
Dingo Roadhouse PieThe pies here are not made here, but they are “locally” made. The lady that served me said they are made at a bakery in Rockhampton, which is only a couple of hours away. The pie itself if fairly plain and inoffensive. But the thing that caught my eye was the name “Dingo” stamped on top of it. I thought it was a nice touch. It sold me.
