Bing Bong
Not far from King Ash Bay is a place called Bing Bong. When you exit King Ash Bay and get to the end of the dirt road you come to a T intersection bitumen road. This is called Robinson Road. If you turn left, you go towards Borroloola. If you turn right, you head towards Bing Bong.
We had been told by several people that there was nothing to see at Bing Bong. They were right.
It turns out that Bing Bong isn’t even a town. You simply come to a dead end road. At the end there is a fence and a gate that goes into a mine site. This mine site is where all the stuff they dig up from the McArthur River mine ends up. It gets loaded up onto a big bardge at this site in Bing Bong and taken out into the Gulf of Carpentaria and loaded onto bigger ships.
There is a lookout tower at the end of the road. Jazz and walked up the tower and took a photo. There is really nothing to see. The only thing interesting about Bing Bong was a small dirt road that we found that actually winded down to a boat ramp. I’ve heard the fishing is good around Bing Bong. So launching your boat there to go fishing could be an option. It would be quicker and cheaper to dive the car to Bing Bong and launch the boat than it would be to drive the boat all the way there via water.
Bing Bong is definitely NOT on the “must see” list for anyone visiting King Ash Bay. But if curiosity gets the better of you (like it did us) then take the drive out there to see for yourself. It took about 40 minutes from Borroloola.
